About the Author

Mary Catherine, known as “MC,” was born in Denver, Colorado, on December 5, 1968. From a young age, she grew up in a household where the warmth of her loving family shaped her perspective. Despite the supportive environment, MC’s life has been marked by significant challenges, which have contributed to her resilience and outlook. MC’s love for animals has been a defining feature throughout her life. She has devoted twenty-five years to the practice of equine body work, nurturing and caring for horses with dedication and expertise.

In pursuit of excellence, MC has engaged in specialized studies and earned certifications in her field. She became certified in equine body work in 2001 and advanced myofascial and somatovisceral muscle activation in 2005. In addition, she has studied and has been using cold laser therapy with incredible results since 2007. Her professional experience spans all disciplines within the horse world, with a particular focus on performance horses and those with traumatic backgrounds.

MC’s extensive hands-on work has driven her to advocate for a deeper understanding of the musculoskeletal system. She believes that increasing knowledge in this area is crucial for the humane treatment of horses, especially those involved in competitive activities. Her work is guided by a commitment to animal welfare, striving to improve conditions through education and compassion.

This novel marks MC’s debut as an author. She is currently working on her autobiography, which will include many heartfelt stories about horses, further reflecting her lifelong connection to animals and her dedication to their well-being.

"Einstein"

Driven by love, people are willing to go to great lengths to discover new answers to old questions.

This theme is central to the story of Einstein and those who cared for him.

Einstein is a real horse whose life story reflects the struggles faced by many horses.

This novel, based on true events, uses Einstein's experiences to shed light on these challenges.

In 2009, the author encountered Einstein. At that time, Wendy,

Einstein's actual owner, was feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about how to help her horse.

She was nearly at the end of her rope, unsure of what steps to take next.

Einstein was extremely wary of others. He resisted any attempts to be touched on his back or head, and even disliked being looked at. His defensive behavior was a clear sign he was physically troubled.

Wendy and Einstein provided perfect inspiration for the characters in this story.

The author, MC, aimed to have readers explore the relativity of many things, but most importantly, the power of love.

Moses Gonzales Sr.

A Tribute to Moses Gonzales Sr.: Master Farrier and Mentor-

Moses Gonzales Sr. is a skilled farrier who worked in the northern California region.

By the grace of God, MC had the opportunity to meet him in 2002 while on her journey to better understand the physical challenges horses face.

A Collaborative Journey
Moses Sr. dedicated countless hours working alongside MC, dealing with numerous cases involving horses with imbalanced hooves and various physical challenges.

His patience and expertise provided invaluable guidance as they tackled these complex situations together.

Through Moses's unique four-hooved balanced approach, MC witnessed remarkable transformations.

Horses that once struggled with movement or exhibited dangerous behaviors were able to turn their lives around both physically and mentally.

The results were often nothing short of miraculous.

Among the many horses Moses helped throughout his career, Einstein stands out as just one example out of thousands who benefited from his expertise and care.

Moses's dedication has left a lasting impression on both the animals and the people he has worked with.

MC remains deeply grateful for Moses’s knowledge and friendship. She is honored to share his story (that is one of many great farriers), hoping it will inspire others as much as Moses has inspired her throughout their journey together.

Nicol Kunka

Nicol really gets what horses need.

She’s always tuned in to their well-being and does whatever it takes to help each one feel comfortable and happy.

Her knack for understanding the subtle signals from her horse makes her a great partner, always looking out for their health and spirit.

Even though Nicol’s schedule keeps her busy as a trainer, she fits in equine body work too.

She mixes these methods right into her work, using her skills both as a horse teacher and as someone who cares about their physical health. This way, the horses get the care they need to do their best.

Nicol’s drive shows in how she furthered her equine body work education and certification with Dr. Inman.

Nicol spent loads of hours working with MC, side by side, helping horses together. It’s clear she loves learning and working as a team, always wanting to do better for the horses she looks after.

There’s something truly amazing about Nicol. She has a peaceful but strong connection with horses—perfect for a story about a horse that just need someone to believe in him. Nicol’s way proves how important it is to see and encourage the unique spirit in every horse, showing that, with the right care, any horse can shine.

Lynn Strauman

The Journey of Lynn Strauman and MC:

In 2007, Lynn Strauman reached out to MC seeking assistance with a mare she was experiencing difficulties with.

This initial contact marked the beginning of a significant professional relationship.

At the time, Lynn was partnered with Ann. Together, they soon came to depend greatly on MC's expertise in musculoskeletal release work.

They hired MC for many years, entrusting her with the care of numerous special Gypsy horses.

Lynn is a remarkable and vibrant individual whose experiences with Gypsy horses are deeply spiritual and unique.

MC felt compelled to document a portion of Lynn's journey, hoping that a wider audience would appreciate meeting Lynn and Romipen.

Robert Hunter, DVM

In 2000, MC met Dr. Hunter at Carbondale Farms in Ione, California.

This serendipitous encounter marked the beginning of a unique relationship built on a deep, shared love of horses.

At the time, MC worked at the equine facility as a multi-task farm hand, not as a body worker. MC’s duties included caring for about forty horses representing diverse ages and breeds.

The meeting between Dr. Bob Hunter and MC led to an intriguing journey, entirely rooted in their mutual bond with horses.

Their collaboration was shaped by this unique connection, influencing both of their work with horses.

Dr. Bob Hunter is recognized as an outstanding equine veterinarian and a genuine, admirable figure.

MC expresses deep gratitude for Dr. Hunter’s presence and influence throughout their time working together and hopes you enjoy this story that depicts just a sliver of his journey being an equine veterinarian.

Jim Garfinkel DVM

Dr. Jim Garfinkel and His Impact on the Equine Community-

MC resided in Amador County and worked with horses at Farm Veterinary Clinic.

From approximately 2003 to 2010, MC established a travel route that included the Plymouth area. The clinic served as a meeting point where clients could bring their horses for MC's expert attention.

In both real life and as depicted in the novel, Dr. Jim Garfinkel's remarkable humility and commitment to teamwork played a pivotal role in the story’s events, especially regarding the horse known as Einstein.

MC has witnessed Dr. Garfinkel’s exceptional skills firsthand, both in the clinic and out in the field, and has consistently been impressed by his ability to connect with and care for horses.
MC considers herself very fortunate to know Dr. Garfinkel, a veterinarian whose intelligence and kind-hearted nature shine through in his dedication to equine well-being.

Dr. Garfinkel brings a distinctive blend of experience and holistic philosophy to his practice.

As a competition cutting rider, Dr. Garfinkel understands the demands placed on performance horses. He has also pursued education in acupuncture, which he has integrated into his veterinary practice for many years.

Furthermore, Dr. Garfinkel demonstrates a deep understanding of the importance of proper hoof support, recognizing its essential role in helping horses reach their full potential.

During the actual events that inspired the novel, Dr. Garfinkel’s daughter, Jessie, was about five years old and present in the barn. By 2025, Jessie Garfinkel has become an established equine body worker in Northern California, continuing her family's legacy in the equine care community.

Poppy Phillips

The Unique Contributions of Poppy and MC to Equine Therapy-

Poppy and MC have both been equine therapists in Northern California since the early 2000s. Over the years, they have become pillars in their field, each bringing a unique approach to their work with horses and the community that surrounds them.

Although Poppy and MC have very different methods, their work is complementary. Both are deeply committed to serving horses with compassion, each in their own distinctive way.

MC and Poppy rarely see each other, but when they do, there is an unspoken bond. They each understand that their lives are devoted—physically, mentally, and spiritually—to being advocates for horses. Their busy schedules reflect their unwavering commitment to their calling.

Throughout the years, the equine community has consistently shared with MC how much they and their horses appreciate Poppy. Her exceptional gift holds a special place in this novel, reflecting the widespread admiration and affection she inspires among those who know her.
